How It Works

EV batteries degrade slowly over time, typically losing 2-3% of capacity per year under normal conditions. Most manufacturers warranty batteries for 8 years or 100,000 miles with at least 70% capacity remaining. Charging habits significantly affect longevity: regularly charging to 100% or using DC fast charging frequently accelerates degradation. The ideal practice is to keep daily charging between 20-80% and reserve 100% charges for long trips. Temperature extremes also affect battery life — parking in shade during summer and pre-conditioning while plugged in during winter helps preserve capacity. Modern battery management systems are quite sophisticated, and most EVs retain 85-90% of their original range after 5 years.
